Savanah*, age 8, and her brother Joey*, age 5, had appointments for their annual well-child physical and happily settled in the "Kids’ Corner" to color until their time to be seen. Savanah finished her physical first and sat back down at the table to finish coloring. Joey’s exam took a bit longer. He was understandably frightened at the prospect of getting shots and began crying very loudly. Savanah’s eyes got wide when she heard her brother’s cries and she began to whimper sympathetically. This is when, Emily, the HEALS’ volunteer, rose to the occasion... Emily quickly got some white paper and scissors and cut out a large snowflake. “Hmm,” she mused, “wonder where I could put this?” Savanah’s tears stopped and she asked for some paper so she could make snowflakes, too. Within a few minutes, everyone in the waiting room was cutting out snowflakes and giving them to Emily to tape on the walls of the small waiting area. When Joey got his prizes from the treasure box (a treat for patients who get ‘sticks’) he asked Emily to teach him how and he soon joined the decorating party. Even the teen-ager stopped texting and added her pink snowflakes to the blizzard decorating the walls. Without the kindness and creativity of the Kids’ Corner volunteer, the afternoon would have ended much differently. Thanks to all the HEALS’ volunteers who do such a successful job in helping the children’s visits be as stress free and happy as possible! Shared by: HEALS, Inc. Clinic Coordinator 11/30/2011 Heels for HEALS Holiday Party!
In addition to providing children with a free and caring medical home, HEALS gives away a brand new pair of athletic shoes to every child that visits the clinics for their yearly well-child checkup. Beyond the bright smile and boost in confidence it presents, Heels for HEALS serves as a much needed incentive for the parents to bring their children for this important yearly visit. HEALS appreciates generous friends who recognize the importance of keeping children happy and healthy this holiday season and all throughout the year!
11/17/2011 HEALS Wins Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics!
Several local companies and non-profit organizations were nominated for the Torch Award and were given the opportunity to submit information regarding their ethical relationships with customers, employees and vendors. A prestigious panel comprised of representatives of the academic and business community judged the entries. The businesses and organizations accepted their nomination and provided an entry for the Torch Award, and HEALS, Inc. was honored to have been one of the award-winning organizations! Thank you, Better Business Bureau, for your support! 11/14/2011 American Education Week Celebration Recognizes HEALS, Inc.!
At the annual luncheon on November 14, Dr. Roy Malcolm and Oakwood University recognized HEALS and Executive Director, Connie Carnes, for “Education[al] Leadership.” The clinics play a vital role within the schools in our area, and although HEALS staff members are not “teachers”, HEALS was nominated by a friend in the community for all the clinics do to support the education of children in the community. This recognition was greatly appreciated, and it reflects the hard work and dedication of the hard working staff of HEALS. |
